Today a few friends and myself took part in the 2013 Randolph Lake sprint triathlon. Held at the Randolph Lake NJ. This sprint triathlon that features a short and calm 880yd clockwise lake swim, followed by a rolling 16-mile loop bike course and a mostly trail 5k run.
We signed up very late for this race, as one of our teammates Tony T. had his nephew Alex in the race, and it seemed like it would be a fun race for all of us to join in . So we re-united our mixed relay team of three Triple Threat.. I would take the swim, followed by Tony T. on the bike and Christine would anchor us on the run as usual.
The weather was perfect for a mid-July day in NJ. Clear skies and about 85.
SWIM
Being in the relay division we started with the last swim wave, wave 4. After cheering on Alex who was doing the full triathlon solo, he went off in wave one. Then about 3 minutes aparts waves, 2,3 and finally our relay wave 4 was set to start. This was a non-wetsuit swim due to the recent warm temperatures and the like was likely over 80.
This would be an in-water start, with all the competitors bobby up and down near the start buoy, awaiting for the horn to go off. The swim was fairly smooth with little contact . But I did not feel I had good acceleration today. I felt my feet were dragging. sighting seemed fine and the first buoy came pretty quick. Again I was not able to find a suitable wimmer to draft pace off of, so most of the swim was solo. The rest of the swim was uneventful, navigations seemed a little uneven as I approached the last turn buoy, then it was a dash for the shoreline. Once I hit the shore I stood up and and ran up the sandy hill to the transition area, where I managed to pass a bunch of competitors.
BIKE
After a short run up the beach are to transition a quick chip hand-off to Tony and he was off and running. There was about a 200yd run from the transition area to the dismount line. From there is was hammer time and Tony had a strong ride, with the exception of some challenging hills . The bike course was 16 miles with some rolling terrain and a few hairy turns and some sketchy sections of road. But Tony made is back safe and sound and another quick-handoff and Christine was off and running.
RUN
The run was a mostly trail based counter-clockwise loop around the Lake . Christine’s run started strong with a sub-8 mile and continued well despite the challenging trail terrain. Christine pushed hard all the way to the finish.
FINISH
Al an I started to head over to the finish area, to cheer on Alex T. would would finish first, followed a few moments later by Christine who wrapped up her leg of the relay, we hung around the finish area, swapping stories about the race and taking some photos while we awaited for the awards…
Overall male race winner pro James Chesson (1:12) and female winner Jemila Najjar-keith (1:25). Plus a strong showing for 3rd by 14yd old Bobby Hammond (1:19)
Unfortunately we missed the podium on the relay divisions, only top 3 relay teams received awards. Team Triple Threat finished 5th.. drats!
